CLIPBOARD : March Sales and Use Tax Revenue

County cities collectively received $19.5 million in sales and use tax revenue from the State Board of Equalization during March. The single largest amount, $2.2 million, or 11% of the total, went to Irvine; the smallest, $11,571, to Villa Park.

The aggregate amount received by the cities was 20% less than the March, 1990, disbursement, and there were vast differences in the individual cities as well. Tiny La Palma, for example, received 465% more than last March; Laguna Niguel, San Clemente and Cypress also received in excess of 100% more than in March, 1990. On the other hand, San Juan Capistrano, Anaheim, Mission Viejo and Stanton all got only about half as much as last year.

Each month, city and county governments and other government organizations receive payments from the state in anticipation of actual sales tax revenue. In the fourth month, they receive a cleanup payment--the difference between actual revenue and the amounts previously received--plus the first advance payment for the next quarter. The amounts listed here include cleanup payments for the fourth quarter of 1990 and the first advance payments for the first quarter of 1991. Amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar.
