4-A, 1-A ROUNDUP : Foothill Benefits From Eighth-Inning Error to Advance

Second-seeded Foothill needed eight innings and a throwing error to post a 3-2 victory over Anaheim in the first round of the Division 4-A softball playoffs Thursday at Foothill.
Anaheim tried to complete a double play in the eighth inning, but an errant throw into right field allowed pinch-runner Julie Ehret to score the winning run from second base.
Anaheim led, 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Foothill (21-2) tied it when Kathy Shortall tripled home pinch-runner Tiffany Dawson. Foothill’s Leeann Gonzalez (18-2) pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out seven. Foothill will face Riverside Poly in the second round Tuesday. Anaheim finished 10-6.
In other 4-A games:
Irvine 5, Villa Park 0--Jennifer Brundage (17-2) pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts for fourth-seeded Irvine (25-3). Brundage allowed only a first-inning infield single to Jamie Franco, and faced only 22 batters, one over the minimum. Lisa Goodwin hit a home run in the second inning and Brundage tripled for host Irvine. Villa Park finishes 12-13-1.
Sunny Hills 4, Mission Viejo 0--Bernie Sancuberta (8-7) allowed a bunt single to Mission Viejo’s Kerin Dull to start the game, then retired the next 21 hitters as host Sunny Hills (15-10) advances to face Rowland in the second round Tuesday.
Brea-Olinda 6, Hoover 0--Andrea Schuette (13-5) pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts for unseeded Brea-Olinda (17-6), which will face Fontana in the next round Tuesday. Schuette also hit a two-run home run, and Julie Baker had two hits, including a triple, and two runs batted in for host Brea-Olinda.
Arcadia 1, La Habra 0--Michelle Myrdahl (9-7) pitched a two-hitter for Arcadia, and Missy Talbert scored the only run on a wild pitch with two outs in the third inning. Danielle Ortega (19-3) struck out 10 and threw a five-hitter for host La Habra (20-4).
Fontana 6, Sonora 2--Fontana (14-7) scored three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Amy ReCouper hit a home run in the second inning and Lisa Goldsmith had two hits and one run for visiting Sonora (12-13).
Rowland 3, Canyon 1--Rowland scored two runs in the first inning on an error, a triple and a single at Canyon. Sara Roberts (12-4) pitched four innings and struck out nine for Canyon (21-6).
In Division 1-A:
Whittier Christian 11, Calvary Chapel 6--Christin Crigler and Katrina Alvarez each hit two-run home runs for host Whittier Christian (11-7). Crigler had three hits and scored two runs, and Alvarez scored three runs.
