EL TORO — Orange County will officially welcome home the Gulf War troops today with a parade featuring bands, floats and thousands of marching Marines.
Called the Operation Orange County Victory Parade, it will get under way at 11 a.m. on Alton Parkway near the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
The 55-member Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from the United Kingdom, an elite band of bagpipers and drummers from the unit that gained the nickname Desert Rats during World War II, will take part, in one of its three U.S. postwar appearances.
Dozens of high school bands, color guards and a flyover by Marine fighter jets will take place. The parade, which will also feature a Patriot missile, is expected to last about 90 minutes.
Organized by military and community leaders, the parade will be on a stretch of Alton Parkway from Irvine Boulevard to Jeronimo Road.
For information on the parade route, participants, where to park and how to get to the area, please see B2.
