Patrick Nwankwo, a former sprinter at Azusa Pacific University, has been banned for life by the Nigerian track and field federation after his arrest earlier this month on drug charges.
Nwankwo, 25, was arrested at the airport in Lagos, Nigeria, while boarding a plane bound for New York. According to Agence France-Presse, Nwankwo was caught swallowing several packets containing heroin and charged with drug trafficking.
Nwankwo had been working informally this season as a volunteer coach at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, where his younger brother, Victor, competes. Victor Nwankwo placed fourth in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the state junior college championships Friday at Sacramento. Another Nwankwo brother also attends the school.
Nwankwo was the 100-meter bronze medalist at the African Championships in 1989.
