LA HABRA — A Los Angeles youth was fatally shot and a 13-year-old girl wounded on a street corner here early Sunday in what police said was the city’s third murder this year. All the slayings have apparently been gang-related.
Detectives were still trying to piece together details of the drive-by shooting, which occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. at the corner of La Habra Boulevard and Idaho Street, police said.
The dead youth, identified as 18-year-old Luis Fernandez, was mortally wounded by a gunshot to the chest, La Habra Police Sgt. Perry Miller said. Fernandez was rushed to Friendly Hills Regional Medical Center in La Habra, where he was pronounced dead a short time after the shooting incident.
Miller said Fernandez was among a group of young people congregating at the corner when several rounds were fired from a passing car. Another bullet struck the 13-year-old Los Angeles girl in the leg.
Her name was withheld pending notification of relatives. Miller said she was listed in good condition at an undisclosed local hospital.
Indications are that the shooting is gang-related, Miller said. “But at this point we are not prepared to release any further details concerning the identity of the possible gangs involved or the incidents preceding the shooting.”
Miller said the two previous murders in La Habra this year also were associated with gang activity.
Early indications suggest that both Fernandez and the girl were random victims of a gang retaliation. “More than likely they were innocent bystanders,” Miller said.
He did not know if the girl was acquainted with Fernandez.
Several witnesses were questioned, but no suspect was in custody late Sunday, police said.
