Fourth-seeded Brian MacPhie of USC retired because of a pulled hamstring, but two Trojan teammates and two UCLA players won their first-round matches Wednesday in the 107th NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships at Athens, Ga.
MacPhie sustained the injury in the third set of his match against Harvard’s Michael Zimmerman, who was leading, 1-6, 6-2, 2-0.
USC’s Byron Black, seeded eighth, was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Tamer El Sawy of Louisiana State, and Donny Isaak defeated Joe McDonough of San Diego State, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
UCLA’s Jason Netter, last year’s runner-up, ousted Mark Booras of West Virginia, 6-3, 6-4; teammate Fritz Bissell beat Tim Jessup of Tennessee, 6-2, 6-2, but Bruin Mark Knowles lost to Fabio Silberberg of Tennessee, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.
Alejo Mancisidor, Pepperdine’s only entrant in the 64-player field, defeated Cha Hoon Im of Arkansas, 6-1, 6-3.
The only other seeded player failing to advance was Stanford’s Jonathan Stark, a 6-4, 6-4 loser to Mississippi State’s Mark Jeffrey. Top-seeded Conny Falk of Miami eliminated Yaser Zaatini of East Tennessee State, 6-4, 6-3.
Georgia, which lost to USC for the team title, was the only school with three players left in the 32-man field: second-seeded Al Parker, Patricio Arnold and Ivan Baron, the only freshman, are remaining.
