The Philharmonic’s First Lady: The New York Philharmonic has named a woman as managing director. She is Deborah Borda, a 41-year-old violist who has held top level management positions with the Minnesota Orchestral Assn., the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony. Kurt Masur, currently chief conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, Germany, who takes over as the Philharmonic music director in September, said in a statement he was pleased with the choice.
