Underwood Named Westminster Coach

WESTMINSTER — Brian Underwood, a member of the UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton basketball staffs the past two seasons, has been named boys’ basketball coach at Westminster High School.
He replaces Dick Katz, who resigned but will continue to coach as an assistant at Golden West and as head coach of Westminster’s girls’ team.
Underwood, a former Corona del Mar player and a 1986 graduate of Cal Lutheran, was a volunteer assistant at UC Irvine last season after serving as a graduate assistant at Cal State Fullerton the season before. He also has been an assistant at Cal Lutheran and Thousand Oaks High School.
Underwood will not be on the teaching staff at Westminster this year.
“The program has improved while Coach Katz was there,” Underwood said. “I feel like I’m taking over at a good time. It’s an up-and-coming program in probably one of the strongest leagues in Southern California.”
Under Katz, the Westminster boys were 7-18 last season.
