11 Killed on County Roads Over the Weekend

Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, 11 people were killed in Los Angeles County traffic accidents, compared to seven a year ago.
Statewide, the number of deaths was 40, down from 59 last year because of stiff drunk-driving penalties and increased seat belt use, officials said.
The death toll during the 78-hour reporting period, which started at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight Monday, was the lowest in 27 years, said Chief Ed Gomez of the California Highway Patrol. In 1964, 35 people died.
