Ships to Head Home From Bangladesh

WASHINGTON — About 7,600 Marines and sailors who were detoured to Bangladesh for relief work on their way back from the Persian Gulf War will hoist anchor today and head home, a Pentagon spokesman said Tuesday.
Eight ships from Amphibious Ready Group 3 and the 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade were sent in mid-May to provide helicopter transportation services to relief efforts following a devastating typhoon that killed a reported 138,000 Bangladeshi living in low-lying areas.
Pentagon spokesman Bob Hall said those ships will leave today, and, although they might make a stop in the Philippines, are eventually to return to their home ports at San Diego and Long Beach.
