SOUTHERN SECTION SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS : Meyer, Quartz Hill Thwart Top-Seeded Don Lugo, 7-4

Debra Meyer was two for three and drove in three runs Tuesday as Quartz Hill High upset top-seeded Don Lugo, 7-4, and advanced to the Southern Section 3-A Division softball championship game for the first time.
Don Lugo, ranked No. 1 entering the playoffs, had allowed only two runs in its past 12 games. Quartz Hill, which improved to 22-3, entered the playoffs ranked 10th.
Meyer’s bases-loaded triple in the second inning gave host Quartz Hill a 3-0 lead. After Don Lugo (25-2) tied the score, 4-4, with four runs in the fourth, Quartz Hill scored what proved to be the winning run on a bases-loaded, two-out error in the bottom of the fourth.
Cindy Sims added a two-out, two-run single in the sixth that extended the Rebels’ lead to 7-4.
La Reina 6, Western Christian 0--Michelle St. Pierre was two for three, drove in three runs and pitched a three-hitter to lead host La Reina, the top-seeded team, in a 1-A semifinal playoff game.
Jamie Kendig had two hits and a stolen base for La Reina (20-5).
St. Pierre improved to 16-1.
Woodcrest Christian 9, Oakwood 0--Oakwood committed five errors in the first inning that led to a 7-0 deficit in a Small Schools semifinal playoff game. Tracy Stern (17-4) allowed nine hits and struck out eight for Oakwood (18-4).
Paraclete 4, Whittier Christian 0--Catcher Amy Umberg hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to spark visiting Paraclete in a 1-A semifinal playoff game.
