Jack Howell (bruised rib) was activated off the disabled list and Bobby Rose was returned to triple-A Edmonton. Rose hit .111 in six games. . . . Pitching coach Marcel Lachemann said no date has been set for Fernando Valenzuela’s first start for the Angels. Valenzuela is scheduled to make a third and final minor league start Saturday, for double-A Midland at Little Rock, Ark. “To rush it would be a mistake,” Lachemann said. “If he’s ready, fine. If not, let’s take the time.” . . . Coach Jimmie Reese, 86, underwent successful cataract surgery last week. He is free to resume his fungo-hitting duties when he feels ready, trainer Ned Bergert said.
