PLACENTIA — Camarillo finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning to beat Katella, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Southern Section 5-A playoffs Tuesday at El Dorado High School.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Kelly Bannon reached base on a bunt single. She moved to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on Miki Mangan’s single to left.
Camarillo’s Laura Richardson, who had given up only two hits and an intentional walk in seven innings, walked the first two batters she faced in the eighth. Kelsi Armbruster’s sacrifice advanced the runners to second and third. Richardson intentionally walked Tammy Lohman for the second time to load the bases with one out.
Richardson struck out the next two batters, finishing the game with 13 strikeouts, to advance Camarillo (24-4) to the 5-A championship game against Buena (22-6) at 8 p.m. Saturday at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.
Armbruster gave up six hits, struck out one, walked none and hit a batter.
Camarillo threatened to score in the fourth, when Johnna Mike led off with a single to right. Bonnie Billups was hit by a pitch, and Lori Vargeson’s fielder’s choice advanced both runners. But Tresa Peraza fouled out to the catcher and Andrea Soto grounded out to short.
Katella, which finishes 17-7, had its chance in the sixth, when Laurie Rossini singled down the right-field line. Armbruster sacrificed her to second and Lohman was walked intentionally. Richardson put an end to the Knights’ threat by striking out the next two batters.
