Clemson Game Doesn’t Thrill Titan Coach

Cal State Fullerton has agreed to play a nonconference football game at Clemson in 1993, according to Steve DiTolla, Titan interim athletic director.

Fullerton football Coach Gene Murphy said he didn’t learn of the game until recently, but DiTolla said the one-game agreement with the Atlantic Coast Conference power was negotiated by Ed Carroll before he resigned as athletic director in February.

The Titans’ nonconference schedule for 1993 also includes games at Syracuse and Texas El Paso and a home game against Temple. Fullerton has played several large money-guarantee games in the past, earning six-figure checks at Auburn, Louisiana State and Florida, and DiTolla said the guarantee for the Clemson game “would be similar to those of past games.”

Murphy, whose team went 1-11 last season, despises playing games he has virtually no chance of winning, and he didn’t hide his displeasure with the Clemson contract.

Asked if he knew if it was a one-year or multiyear contract, Murphy replied, “I don’t know. I don’t even want to talk about it.”
