Ivan Lendl rallied to beat Pat Cash, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4), retain the title in the grass court tournament at Beckenham, England.
Lendl, seeded No. 1, needed nearly 3 1/2 hours to outlast Cash and boost his confidence two weeks before the start of Wimbledon.
“You get match practice from a tournament like this--that’s why you’re here,” Lendl said.
It appeared as if Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion, was going to have an easy time when he took a 3-0 lead and held on to win the first set in 31 minutes.
“It’s not a great disappointment,” Cash said. “I would have liked to win, but we’re here for one reason--to get practice.”
