BEIJING — Fifteen people were killed Sunday when they jumped from a fire aboard a railway car into the path of an oncoming freight train in southern China, official reports said.
Several dozen passengers panicked when the small fire broke out early Sunday in luggage on a Wuchang-Canton train as it traveled through a tunnel in China’s Guangdong province, the local Yancheng Evening News said.
Some pulled the train’s emergency brake while others jumped from windows. Fifteen people were then crushed to death and six injured by the passing freight train.
