Bolshoi Blasted: Bolshoi star Maya Plisetskaya said in an interview with the Moscow News that she regretted not defecting years ago with fellow dancers Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. “The Bolshoi is . . . held together by slavery and fear,” Plisetskaya, 66, said. “Everybody supports the dictator.” She also regretted giving 95% of her earnings to the state: “I’ve worked 46 years for you, for this country--all to no avail. . . . I’ve been crushed by this system.” The dancer was interviewed during a visit to Moscow before the attempted Soviet coup.
