HUSH JOB: Sheriff Brad Gates was appointed Tuesday as a member of President Bush’s Drug Advisory Council. Gates happened to be in Washington at the time. But his office in Santa Ana, apparently not wanting to violate presidential protocol, was mum about why the sheriff was there and whether he had been appointed. . . . Gates has gained attention with his local campaign: “Drug Abuse Is Life Abuse.”
