Officials to Investigate Remains of 19 Horses

Los Angeles County animal control officials said they plan to investigate the remains of as many as 19 horses found in a rural area of Santa Clarita that is popular for horseback riding.
The remains, which are no more than bones and horsehair, were discovered by Ken Weaver, 56, an archeology student at Cal State Northridge, who says that some of the animals apparently were destroyed because they had broken legs.
Weaver said he found the bones while riding three miles south of Lost Canyon Road on a remote trail near the Angeles National Forest. Shotgun shells lay under oak trees and in a creek bed near the scattered bones. A veterinarian and an investigator will be sent to the site Thursday.
