Japanese Firm Seeks Bankruptcy Court Protection: Maruko Inc., a giant Japanese real estate company with holdings in Southern California, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy court protection in Los Angeles. In August, the company sought similar protection from creditors in Japan. In Southern California, Maruko has acquired such properties as the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel and the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells.
