Cindy Kuragami, who never lost an Orange League tennis match while at Savanna High, is off to a blazing start in her college career at Yale.
Kuragami, a 5-1 1/2 freshman, is playing No. 2 singles and undefeated in 14 matches. She also plays No. 1 doubles with Laura Flynn, the team’s No. 1 singles.
Last weekend at James Madison University, Kuragami won the Eastern College Athletic Conference singles title and teamed with Flynn to take the doubles championship.
Two weeks before, she won the singles competition at the Brown University Invitational in Providence, R.I. Friday, Kuragami will be in first-round action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. Individual Regional Qualifier at Penn in Philadelphia.
“This will be the sixth weekend in a row that we’ve had either a match or a tournament, and five of the six have been away,” she said.
But Kuragami is not complaining. She said she’s happy with college life in the Ivy League.
“It’s definitely a change. It’s a lot of work balancing the school work and the tennis, but I like it a lot,” said Kuragami, who is majoring in economics. “It’s a huge change from Southern California. We are in the middle of fall and it’s gorgeous. We haven’t had snow yet, so I don’t know how I’ll handle that.”
