Supermarket Firm to Lay Off 300: Food 4 Less Supermarkets, parent company of the Alpha Beta and Viva grocery chains, said about 300 people would be laid off beginning Friday in an effort to streamline operations. The layoff comes just five months after the company acquired 142 Alpha Beta stores for $251 million. The cuts will affect primarily retail and part-time employees such as courtesy clerks and workers in the bakery and deli sections, said Adrienne Gaines, a spokeswoman for the company, which has more than 12,000 employees in Southern California.
