FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Mobile Radar Keeps Watch on Traffic

Speeding through Orange County might not be “smart” for motorists, especially these days in Fountain Valley.
A new mobile radar unit will be monitoring vehicle speeds at locations through the city and instantly displaying results as a warning to slow down.
The Mobile Speed Monitoring Awareness Tool, known as SMART, was unveiled Monday by Mayor James Petrikin, Councilman Guy Carrozzo, other city officials and representatives of SAFECO Insurance Cos.
A $10,800 national safety grant awarded by the insurance company paid for the radar device.
“In theory, (SMART) will slow people down and result in fewer accidents,” said Don Heinbuch, a city spokesman.
Although the unit was not christened until Monday, it was operating last weekend along Heil Avenue and Brookhurst Street, home to a neighborhood bedecked in Christmas decorations that draws hundreds of visitors and vehicles from surrounding cities.
