COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Bruner Injured in Master’s Loss to CS Bakersfield

The Master’s College shot poorly and lost senior forward Tom Bruner early in the game because of a concussion, resulting in a 69-55 nonconference loss to Cal State Bakersfield on Friday at Master’s.

Master’s made just 32% of its field-goal attempts (20 of 62) in its poorest effort of the season (the Mustangs shot 41.9% against Albertson on Monday).

Master’s also made just 55% of its free throws (11 of 20), while Bakersfield made 69% (27 of 39).

Master’s could not overcome the loss of Bruner, who suffered a concussion when he was elbowed in a scramble for the ball. Bruner was injured with 9:45 to play in the half and came out for one minute, returned to make a field goal and a free throw, then left with 7:56 left in the half and did not return.

Bruner was taken to Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia.

Master’s edged out to a 31-28 halftime lead and extended it to 35-30 in the second half. But Bakersfield went on an 11-6 run in four minutes to tie the score and gain momentum.

Then Bakersfield went on another 8-2 run to pull ahead, 49-43.

Guard Damon Greer led Master’s with 10 points.
