World Trade Center Towers May Be Up for Sale: The World Trade Center, the government-built 110-story twin towers near Wall Street that took years to turn a profit, may soon be offered for sale. Officials in Gov. Mario Cuomo’s Administration said they would explore the idea of selling the World Trade Center and other state-owned facilities to private interests. Cuomo aide Mary Ann Crotty said the buildings could fetch up to $1 billion, which is less than the amount invested by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to build the complex. She said the sale might have to be in the form of a lease-purchase that provides payments over a period of years to replace the annual profit the center now makes.
