Allied-Signal to Lay Off 600 More Workers: The Morris Township, N.J.-based company said it expects to lay off the additional workers by the year’s end as part of a cost-cutting effort. The cuts would bring the total number of layoffs at the aerospace, automotive and engineered materials company to 6,200--or about 16% of the work force, said company spokesman Michael Ascolese. Allied announced in October it would eliminate 5,000 jobs, a figure that climbed in January to 5,600, Ascolese said. The job reductions will save an estimated $310 million. Company officials said they didn’t know whether this round of firings would end the layoffs.
