Herde Leads Toreros to Victory Against Chapman, 4-3

Kevin Herde of the University of San Diego made himself a 4-3 winner Tuesday over Chapman College, first driving in the tying run in the eighth inning, then knocking in the game-winner with two outs in the bottom of the 10th in a nonconference baseball game at USD.
Herde, a junior right-hander from San Pasqual High, pitched the final 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Jeff Crane to earn his second victory in two decisions.
Herde’s single to center in the 10th inning off Mission Bay graduate Jim Thomas (6-4) drove in Jim Keen from third and gave USD (25-22) its seventh victory in eight games.
Brady Clark drove in USD’s first two runs with a single in the sixth inning. Chapman (29-18) got its runs in the seventh on a three-run homer by Buster Nietzke.
San Diego State scored two runs on two wild pitches in the top of the 11th inning to beat host UC Riverside, 6-4. Benji Grigsby pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the 21st-ranked Aztecs (35-11), getting eight strikeouts and improving his record to 9-1.
In the Aztec 11th, Pat Mummy led off with a single and Rick Page doubled. Then, on an attempted intentional walk to Jason Enomoto, Riverside pitcher Bobby LaRosa sailed one over the catcher’s head, allowing Mummy to score. Then, when Riverside decided to pitch to Enomoto, LaRosa unleashed another wild pitch, and Page scored.
Riverside, ranked ninth in Division II, fell to 27-20.
Leadoff hitter Guy Cataldo went five for five, including a grand slam in the fifth, to lead UC San Diego to a 14-4 nonconference romp over Whittier (17-16-1). Cataldo, a junior shortstop, also scored three times and had two stolen bases. Ryan Flanagan (7-1) pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 for UCSD (25-6-1).
The Masters College (16-25) swept a nonconference doubleheader from Point Loma Nazarene, 3-1 and 9-4. PLNC is 19-24.
GOLF
Steve Van Alstyne and Torrey Pines High graduate Todd Andrews led Pepperdine to its second consecutive West Coast Conference Championship at Torrey Pines North. With a WCC tournament record round of 275 Tuesday, Pepperdine easily distanced runner-up San Francisco, 855-870. USD finished sixth at 930.
Van Alstyne won the individual title with a three-round total of 210, three strokes better than Andrews and San Francisco’s Todd Fischer, the defending champ. Andrews set a WCC tournament record with a six-under 66 Tuesday.
MEN’S TENNIS
No. 1 seeded Robin Willner of Los Angeles defeated George Woodall of San Diego, 7-5, 6-0, to advance through the second round of the National Senior Hardcourt Tournament at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Second-seeded Pete Welsh of Claremont also made it through the round of 32, defeating J.D. O’Brien of San Diego, 6-2, 6-0.
SOFTBALL
UC San Diego finished its season by splitting a home doubleheader against Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Tritons lost the first game, 8-1, and won the second, 2-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Kim Stutzman (3-3), who recorded the last two outs with Toro runners at second and third. UCSD (23-21) broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth when Teri Zuniga (leadoff triple) scored on Emily Rubin’s grounder.
