MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama State Treasurer George Wallace Jr., son and namesake of the state’s former governor and four-time presidential candidate, led the voting in Tuesday’s Democratic primary for a U.S. House seat but appeared headed for a runoff election June 30.
With 94% of the votes counted in the state’s second congressional district, Wallace had 49%, while former state Welfare Commissioner Faye Baggiano had 32% and journalist Larry Lee had 19%.
Wallace is seen as a political moderate and has been endorsed by the Alabama New South Coalition, one of the state’s major black groups.
