‘Disgusting’ Perks

Regarding the story on the payment of huge car allowances to county administrators (“Car Allowances for County Officials Criticized,” July 12) who get very substantial salaries: Whatever happened to that old-fashioned concept that governmental positions offered a chance for public service--not a chance to get rich?
Orange County’s indulgence of well-paid department heads by providing vehicle allowances that exceed the annual income of many taxpayers, while at the same time cutting health services to the needy, is disgusting.
If the county has to reduce its expenditures, let the county employees, including the administrators, share the burden of our depressed economy.
