Regarding “Dramatic Drop in Tourism to Russia,” June 28: I have been doing business in Russia for over two years. Compared with other major cities in the world, I am more on my toes in regard to crime when I am in Hong Kong, Rome or even New York City, than I am in Moscow. To compare New York to Moscow is like comparing New York to Houston. Houston has crime like any other city but nowhere near the levels of New York.
All of my information is recent, as I returned June 15.
Regarding the food shortages and bloodshed that is going on in the other republics, if you are a Western tourist, don’t give food shortages a second thought. If you are on a tour, you will be well taken care of.
Also of special note to readers: Don’t buy too many souvenirs on the street. Russian customs at the airports is becoming even more strict than it was last year. Keep in mind that anything bought in Russia without an official receipt is subject to confiscation on the spot.
If you don’t want to go to Russia for fear of your safety or lack of food, your fears are not legitimate. I hope that some of the people who really are interested in going to Russia will not be scared off.
