Fujitsu to Close San Diego Plant, Lay Off 260: The Japanese electronics giant said it will halt production immediately at its computer chip-making plant in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego. The company said the closure of its San Diego manufacturing division will result in the layoff of 260 local employees. The company said it was necessary to shut down the plant--open since 1980--because of “the downturn in the economy and competitive pressure.” To encourage local companies to hire the workers, Fujitsu said it would pay San Diego employers $2,000 for each laid-off Fujitsu worker hired over the next year. The company makes a broad line of standard and custom semiconductor products and electronics components.
