A majority of Chinese-Americans (54.7%) and Japanese-Americans (63.4%) favor Democratic candidate Bill Clinton for president, while President Bush is favored by Filipino-Americans (54.2%) and Vietnamese-Americans (69.4%).
The results were part of a poll conducted the week of Aug. 3 by the Asian Survey Research Center, a nonprofit organization. The poll results were released recently by Los Angeles City Councilman Michael Woo and other officials.
Sponsored as a public service by Asian Business Connection, a Rosemead telemarketing company, the survey center will periodically poll Asian-Americans. The first poll surveyed 1,185 Asian-American households in California, New York, Texas, Illinois, New Jersey and Hawaii. About 70% of the 7.3 million Asians in the United States live in those six states.
