LAGUNA NIGUEL — A pedestrian was killed Wednesday afternoon by a vehicle that fled the scene after the accident, police said.
Eran Marie Bruton, 68, of Laguna Niguel was crossing Street of the Golden Lantern, walking east on Sweetmeadow Street, about 1:20 p.m. when she was struck by either a small pickup truck or a sport utility vehicle, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Harold Schaffroth.
Bruton had paused at the center divider and then continued walking despite a “don’t walk” signal, witnesses said. She was thrown or carried about 100 feet, they added. The truck had a green light, witnesses told police.
The vehicle that struck Bruton paused and then headed north on Golden Lantern. A witness followed the vehicle, but lost it when the driver ran several red lights, police said.
Bruton was pronounced dead on arrival at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.
