Musicians Get Together for Benefit
More than 25 rock, country, R&B; and jazz acts will perform Sunday at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano to benefit the Orange County Musicians Foundation. All proceeds from the nine-hour-plus show--featuring Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers and surf guitar legend Dick Dale, as well as former Desert Rose Band guitarist John Jorgenson--will go into a fund for area musicians with serious to catastrophic medical needs.
Foundation president Greg Topper, a rock pianist who will play a tribute to Jerry Lee Lewis, explained that many musicians do not have adequate insurance to cover steep medical costs of illnesses or accidents. This annual show is one of the organization’s primary fund-raising activities.
Others set to perform include Billy Swan, whose “I Can Help” was a No. 1 pop hit in 1974; ‘50s R&B; greats Don & Dewey, and Dick Dodd, who was a member of the Standells (“Dirty Water”). Foundation board member Ed Arnold, a KTLA-TV sportscaster, will emcee along with KZLA-FM deejay Shawn Parr.
