DANA POINT : City to Receive $30,000 Arts Grant

Dana Point will receive a $30,000 federal grant to develop a 20-year cultural arts plan, city officials have announced.

The National Endowment for the Arts will award the city the grant when the federal agency receives its budget from the federal government, which is expected by the end of the year, said Barbara Healy, administrative coordinator for Dana Point. “With funds from the city and other organizations, we’ll be able to put together a budget of $71,000,” she said.

Some of the money will be used to hire a consultant to help the city’s Cultural Arts Steering Committee identify the city’s cultural arts needs. For instance, there are no facilities exclusively for dance groups or theater performances, Healy said.

“The parks district facilities get booked up very quickly, and hotel rooms are too costly,” she said. “Maybe what we need is a multipurpose building that can accommodate performances and maybe also have space for an art gallery to showcase local artists.”

The public can attend the Cultural Arts Steering Committee meeting Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Dana Point Library to offer opinions on the planning process, Healy said.
