Lt. Ken Head, a 22-year veteran of the Fullerton Police Department, has been promoted to captain by Police Chief Philip Goehring.
Effective Saturday, Head will be in charge of communications, records, the jail, crime analysis, personnel and training.
Head joined the Police Department in 1970 and has worked in patrol, juvenile crime and investigations.
His father worked in the Long Beach Police Department and tried to discourage his son from becoming a policeman, Head said.
One of Head’s hobbies is drag racing. He drives a rebuilt 1991 Dodge Daytona, which, he said, can reach 235 m.p.h. in six seconds.
Head and his friend Jerry Crawford work on the 2,500-horsepower engine in Head’s own machine shop.
The car is covered with anti-drug abuse slogans, and Head uses it in Police Department drug awareness programs for children. “It’s bringing something exciting to them,” he said. “They really seem to be attentive.”
Head has a bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of Redlands and is working on a master’s degree in the same field from Cal State Fullerton.
