Coach: Sharon Kennedy (fifth year).
1991: 14-4, 6-2 in league; finished second in Angelus League; lost to eventual champion Los Alamitos in the Southern Section Division 2-A semifinals.
Key returners: Erika Asmuss, Sr., was 60-0 last season as team’s No. 1 singles player; Sara Jarrett, So., will take over at No. 2 singles; Trisha Abe, Sr., was 54-0 at No. 1 doubles with Kim Conter, who graduated; Cheri Ota, Jr., will team with Abe after playing No. 3 singles last season; Christina Alvarado, Sr., is back at No. 2 doubles with new partner.
Key newcomers: Gabby Alvarado, Fr.; Julie Lighthipe, Fr.
Outlook: They finished second in the Angelus League the last two seasons after winning the championship 11 consecutive years, but now the Monarchs face steeper terrain as part of the realigned South Coast League. “We’ve jumped up two levels (Division 2-A, now Division III, to Division I),” Kennedy said. “I don’t know what to expect. I think we have a very strong singles squad but it’ll take awhile for our doubles teams to jell.”
