Landress, Granada Hills Stumble in Opener, 28-7
- Share via
Sophomore transfer Jimmy Landress’ debut at quarterback for Granada Hills High on Friday night was simply smashing--as in smashing to the turf, smashing into his running backs, and being smashed out of bounds.
Landress, who was cleared to play by City Section officials on the eve of the game, was not alone as Granada Hills was smashed and burned, 28-7, by Lynwood in a nonleague opener.
Landress played the second half at quarterback but was clearly confused at times. He was sacked three times and completed only three of seven passes. However, late in the fourth period he led the Highlanders to their only touchdown.
“I was feeling a lot of pressure,” Landress said. “I just wanted to do good.”
Granada Hills’ score followed a 32-yard toss to Eric Carpenter that put the Highlanders at the Lynwood two-yard line. Landress sneaked over for the touchdown on the next play, but only 2 minutes 22 seconds remained in the game.
Granada Hills tailback Raheem Kyle, who collided with Landress in the backfield several times, also found the going difficult, rushing for 31 yards in 12 carries.
The Highlanders were held to four yards rushing and 98 overall.
Lynwood was led by running back Jeff Ridgeway, who gained 104 yards in 15 carries and scored on runs of 33 and 18 yards.
Quarterback Joe Austin added 58 yards in eight carries and scored on runs of one and 35 yards. Lynwood gained 197 yards--all on the ground.
Lynwood stymied Granada Hills in the first half, limiting the Highlanders to 10 yards rushing and 62 yards overall.
Starting quarterback Matt Livingston completed just two of 11 passes for 52 yards in the first half threw two interceptions.
Lynwood kept to the ground in the first half, running the ball on 21 of 22 first-half plays.
Ridgeway did most of the damage, rushing for 111 yards in 11 carries and scoring on runs of 33 and 18 yards.
