Los Alamitos Race Course co-owners Lloyd Arnold and Chris Bardis were on hand Saturday night to see their 3-year-old pacer, Humstinger, win the first $150,000 California Pace for colts by 4 1/4 lengths.
Sent off as the 2-5 favorite, Humstinger, driven by Ross Croghan, took the lead in front of the grandstands the first time around. He set easy fractions of 57 1/5 to the half and 1:26 3/5 past the three-quarter mile marker. The 3-year-old son of No Nukes then paced his final quarter in 27 3/5 for a final time of 1:54 1/5.
“He didn’t like the dirt being kicked in his face early,” Croghan said. “But once he got on the front, he was all business.”
Humstinger won $75,000 and has earned more than $250,000.
You Better You Bet finished second and 30-1 longshot Gadget Magic was third. All That Rhythm, Skytel and Eastern Scooter rounded out the field.
