Four men dressed in black robbed four men in Goat’s Canyon near the border Sunday night, shooting one of them, San Diego police said.
Jesus Cardenas, 33, of Michoacan, Mexico, was shot in the hip near the 1600 block of Monument Road at 10:47 p.m. Sunday, officials said. He was listed in good condition at UC San Diego Medical Center on Monday afternoon.
Cardenas and his companions, who police said were crossing the border illegally, were walking in the canyon when four men jumped from the bushes and ordered them to lay face down. The robbers, 16 to 20 years old, searched the victims’ pockets, warning them not to look or they would be killed.
Cardenas looked up and was shot, police said. Cardenas’ companions carried him to a horse rental ranch where police were called, Sgt. Ted Mims said.
Three robberies were reported in the canyon during the weekend, Mims said, for a total of 62 in the past year.
