ANTELOPE VALLEY : Study Asked of New State Prison Costs
- Share via
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday asked county and state officials to study the additional workload and costs associated with the anticipated February opening of a state prison in the Antelope Valley.
Legislation passed in the final days of the state legislative session waived a requirement that a prison had to be placed in East Los Angeles before the Antelope Valley prison could open.
Supervisor Mike Antonovich, who made the request for the study, said that the new prison will increase responsibilities in county departments ranging from courts to the district attorney’s office and the Sheriff’s Department.
Some of the costs will be reimbursed by the state and Antonovich said a new accounting system may have to be developed to seek that reimbursement.
The board asked that the county chief administrative officer report back on the findings by Dec. 30.
