LANSING, Mich. — When Rita Downing borrowed money from her boss to buy a lottery ticket, she promised that she would split any winnings 50-50. And much to the surprise of both of them, she got the chance to keep that promise.
Downing, 36, who lives in Goshen, Ind., about 20 miles south of the Michigan state line, said she learned on Friday that her ticket won a $14-million Michigan lottery jackpot.
Her boss, Larry Schlabach, president of Superior Rigging & Erecting Inc., said Downing called him later Friday on his car phone.
“She was screaming, ‘We won! we won!’ ” said Schlabach, 43.
