LONG BEACH — Pat McAdam’s 48-yard touchdown reception late in the game helped El Toro defeat Long Beach Poly, 9-0, Friday night in a nonleague game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
With 7 minutes 14 seconds left in the fourth quarter, El Toro (2-2-1) took over on its 11 after Poly (2-3) failed to gain a first down on a fake field-goal attempt.
Eleven plays later, Bryan Lefevers threw a pass to a wide-open McAdam, who ran unchallenged down the left sideline with 2:08 left in the fourth quarter.
“We went deep and had a real opportunity to run the ball in,” El Toro Coach Mike Milner said.
Said Long Beach Poly Coach Jerry Jaso: “That was a really good call Mike and his team made.”
Lefevers completed six of 14 attempts for 104 of El Toro’s 166 offensive yards.
The teams were scoreless until the final 1:08 of the second quarter when Jeff Fackwell blocked Richard Gonzales’ punt into the end zone. Long Beach Poly recovered for a safety, which was the high point for El Toro in the first half.
“I was dissatisfied with our first-half play,” Milner said. “We had excellent field position and we should have scored twice, but we weren’t able to capitalize.”
Said Jaso: “They couldn’t buy a score against our defense. We pressured their quarterback (Lefevers, sacked six times). Stoutmire, who had three sacks, played a super game for us.”
