Kelly’s Big First Half Proves Enough for Sonora

LA HABRA — Cubby Kelly scored three first-half touchdowns as Sonora defeated Whittier La Serna, 20-8, at La Habra High School.
Kelly converted on scoring runs of three, 12, and two yards as the Raiders took a 20-0 halftime lead. The junior finished with 203 yards, 106 of which came in the first half, in 23 carries.
Sonora (2-3) held the Lancers scoreless for three quarters by capitalizing on three turnovers. Jimmy Canales and Noel Ishikawa both had interceptions for the Raiders.
The Lancers (2-3) avoided being shut out when Mike Sipple scored on a six-yard run in the fourth quarter. Sipple led La Serna with 49 rushing yards in nine carries.
Quarterback Mike Hale completed 15 of 30 passes for 188 yards for La Serna.
Jim Hunter caught a game-high nine passes for 108 yards in a losing cause for the Lancers.
