Roosevelt lived up to its reputation as one of the top teams in City Section 4-A Division girls’ volleyball with a strong victory over South Gate in an Eastern League game Tuesday.
The Roughriders improved their mark to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in league play, while handing the Rams (6-1, 1-1) their first defeat. Roosevelt vanquished South Gate in four games, 15-2, 15-13, 14-16 and 15-9.
Roosevelt senior Gabby Gallegos (five assists, one kill, one ace) set the stage for hitters Lisa Jacobs (11 kills, four blocks) and Leona Jacobs (eight kills, three blocks) as the Roughriders put away the Rams in the first game.
South Gate broke Roosevelt’s stride in the third game, coming back from a 12-4 deficit. Juniors Margot Truyenque (13 kills, two blocks) and Oneida Toscano (five kills, one block, one ace) led a 12-2 Rams charge to take the game.
Trailing 9-5 in the fourth game, South Gate had a strong serving performance by Jennifer Hyder, Elva Jimenez and Miurel Duarte, who each contributed aces to help the Rams tie the score at 9. But Roosevelt’s Lisa Jacobs helped seal the victory with an uncontested spike as the Roughriders ran off six unanswered points.
