New Aquarium

You ran a letter (Sept. 27) that insinuated that San Diego’s new aquarium is tax-supported because it is part of the UC San Diego system. Your readers should check out their facts before they write you.
Two of my friends and I visited the Stephen Birch Aquarium, talked to the staff and were surprised. Not a penny in California state tax funds went into building the facility. In fact, private donations and fund-raising programs over the last five years were used to build it.
The result is a new cultural attraction and museum that we can all enjoy and an educational outreach program for our schoolchildren to discover the wonders and resources in our oceans. San Diegans can be proud of the new aquarium. Their hands, money and love built the place--not tax dollars.
