TENNIS ROUNDUP : Top-Seeded Edberg Loses to Volkov at Tokyo

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg was upset Friday after Michael Chang and Ivan Lendl won their quarterfinal matches in the $1.1-million Seiko Super tournament at Tokyo.
Alexander Volkov of Russia overwhelmed Edberg, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, foiling the Swede’s bid to defend his title.
“I feel great beating the World’s No. 3 player,” the eighth-seeded Volkov said. “I know how to play against him.”
Second-seeded Chang struggled against unseeded Kenny Thorne, who is ranked 272nd in the world, but won, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
Fifth-seeded Lendl defeated fourth-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia, 6-3, 6-4.
Henrik Holm of Sweden registered his second upset in two days, beating sixth-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Holm defeated third-seeded Boris Becker, 6-1, 6-2, on Thursday.
Today’s semifinals feature Holm vs. Volkov and Chang vs. Lendl.

Mary Joe Fernandez came from behind to defeat defending champion and fifth-seeded Anke Huber of Germany, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the semifinals of the $350,000 Porsche Grand Prix tournament at Filderstadt, Germany.
Fourth-seeded Fernandez will play top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina. Sabatini beat Germany’s Wiltrud Probst, 6-4, 6-1.
Third-seeded Martina Navratilova defeated Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), and will play Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain, who beat Austria’s Judith Wiesner, 6-1, 6-1.

Unseeded Thomas Enquist of Sweden advanced to the semifinals of Italy’s Bolzano Indoor tournament when his opponent, third-seeded Andrei Medvedev, retired in the third set because of pain in his arm.
In other quarterfinals, Andrei Cherkasov of Russia defeated eighth-seeded Jonas Svensson of Sweden, 6-4, 6-1, and fifth-seeded Arnaud Boetsch of France beat Italy’s Omar Camporese, 6-4, 6-3.

Roscoe Tanner and Jaime Fillol defeated Cliff Drysdale and Eddie Dibbs, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, in the third round of the round-robin ATP senior tour championships at Ponte Verda, Fla.
The team of Ross Case and Marty Riessen was declared a walkover winner against Roy Emerson and Brian Gottfried when Emerson was forced to withdraw because of a pulled groin muscle.
The championship will be determined today.
