VENTURA : City to Seek State Grant for Bike Trail

The city will apply for $750,000 in state grant funds to help construct the Ventura River Trail, which would join two bicycle paths into the largest bike trail in Ventura County.

The trail would connect the state’s five-mile Omer Rains Trail on the Ventura coastline with the county’s 9.5-mile Ojai Valley Trail at Foster Park. Bicyclists, equestrians and pedestrians would be able to go from the Pacific Ocean into the Ojai mountains without battling traffic.

The council approved the grant application on Monday. The project will cost about $2.6 million, and the City Council has committed $500,000 from city funds for the project, said Barbara Harison, director of parks and recreation.

“The maximum we can get from the state is $750,000, and hopefully we’ll get all of it,” Harison said. Next summer, the city will find out how much money it will receive, she said.

The city is also planning to apply for $500,000 in federal grants, Harison said.
