PRESERVING WAR: For 50 years, R. E. Herold of Laguna Hills has kept in his vault some rare color film footage. It shows the arrival of American troops on Japanese soil at the end of World War II, which he shot as an Army captain. Now Herold, who teaches film history classes at Rancho Santiago College, has converted the film to tape. . . . He hopes to sell the 30-minute piece, which he calls “Objective Kobe,” to public television, then donate it to the Smithsonian. “It’s history that should be seen,” Herold says.
