A Chula Vista man accused of fatally stabbing a female friend and then apparently trying to commit suicide pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder charges.
John Fitzgerald Shavers, 27, made his plea during a bedside arraignment at Harborview Hospital. A preliminary hearing was set for Dec. 7.
Shavers is charged with killing Andrea Benjamin, 27, of Mission Valley.
Benjamin was discovered in her apartment in the River Run Drive complex Sunday afternoon. Shavers was arrested four hours later while he was being treated for severe cuts on both wrists.
